Sacha inchi vs chia, flax and fish oil

Last updated:

In short

Amazon Andes sacha inchi oil carries 48.2% alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, the plant omega-3), 36% linoleic acid and 8.9% oleic acid — our own product specification, not a literature average. It does not have the highest ALA of the plant oils: chia (≈55–64%) is higher and flax overlaps (≈39–54%). Sacha inchi's advantage is the combination — high ALA in a cold-pressed oil, from a seed whose press-cake also yields a 58.3% protein powder. Like every plant source, it contains no EPA or DHA.

Most supplier pages claim their ingredient is the best omega-3 source. The data does not support that claim for anyone, including us. The sacha inchi row below is our own product specification; the comparison rows are peer-reviewed literature, linked. We publish it because a formulator choosing between these oils deserves the real comparison — and because a page that admits where it loses is worth more than one that does not.

Read this honestly: on ALA percentage alone, chia leads. Our own 48.2% also sits slightly below the 50.8% reported in the literature — origin, variety, harvest and pressing all move the number, which is exactly why we publish our specification rather than quote a paper about the species. Flax varies from 39.2% to 54.1% across varieties, for the same reason. No plant oil contains EPA or DHA; the body converts ALA into them at limited efficiency (NIH ODS). Any supplier telling you their plant oil delivers EPA/DHA is wrong.

Where sacha inchi does differentiate

Protein in our powder58.3 g/100 gBuyers come to sacha inchi for the omega-3 — and then find the same seed also yields a 58.3% protein powder from the press-cake. Chia and flax press-cake are not positioned this way. It does not replace the omega-3 argument; it is the second reason to choose the crop.Amazon Andes Export S.A.C.

The takeaway for sourcing: pick sacha inchi when you want an omega-3 oil plus a complete plant protein from one traceable Amazonian crop. Pick chia if the only variable you optimise is ALA percentage. This is the comparison we give buyers on a call; there is no reason to hide it here.

Notes & limits

The sacha inchi figures on this page are our own product specification — the range we produce against — not a lot result. The lot-level certificate of analysis ships with your order; ask us for a current COA and a sample before you specify.
The Peruvian sanitary registration numbers above are verifiable in the DIGESA public registry. We publish them so you can check us rather than take our word.
Not yet on this page, and we would rather say so: the ALA percentage of the powder's residual fat, heavy metals (Pb, Cd, As, Hg), peroxide value, and the α/γ/δ tocopherol split. They are in progress with our quality team — ask us and we will tell you where each one stands. Note that the nutrition panel's 'Vitamin E 2.4 mg' counts only alpha-tocopherol — sacha inchi's tocopherols are mostly gamma and delta, so the label understates the real antioxidant load by roughly an order of magnitude.
The comparison rows for chia and flax are from peer-reviewed literature and describe those species, not any specific commercial product.

Frequently asked questions

Does sacha inchi have more omega-3 than chia?
No. On alpha-linolenic acid as a percentage of total fatty acids, chia oil is reported at roughly 55–64%, against 48.2% in the Amazon Andes sacha inchi oil specification. Sacha inchi's case is the combination of high ALA with a seed whose press-cake also yields a 58.3% protein powder, not a higher ALA number.
Does sacha inchi oil contain EPA or DHA?
No. Sacha inchi contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the plant-form omega-3. No plant oil contains EPA or DHA; the body converts ALA into them at limited efficiency. Only marine and algal sources supply EPA/DHA directly.
How much alpha-linolenic acid is in sacha inchi oil?
Amazon Andes sacha inchi oil is specified at 48.2% ALA, 36% linoleic acid and 8.9% oleic acid. Published analyses of the species report around 50.8% ALA, with the broader literature spanning roughly 35–55% depending on origin, variety and extraction. Lot-specific values appear on the certificate of analysis.
How much protein is in sacha inchi powder?
The Amazon Andes sacha inchi powder specification is 58.3 g of protein per 100 g, with 5.9 g of fat, 18.3 g of carbohydrate, 3.1 g of fibre and 2.5 g of ash. It is milled to 80 mesh (90%) and carries the nine essential amino acids of the seed protein.
Why does sacha inchi oil need tocopherols?
Any oil rich in alpha-linolenic acid is prone to oxidation. Sacha inchi carries roughly 2.4–2.8 g/kg of total tocopherols naturally, and cold-pressing retains more than solvent extraction — which is why packaging, storage and extraction method drive shelf life more than ALA content does.
Where does Amazon Andes source sacha inchi?
From the Peruvian Amazon, principally the Lamas–Tarapoto area of San Martín and neighbouring valleys, through direct and cooperative agreements with growers. Every lot is traceable and ships with a certificate of analysis.
